The Sony VAIO range has been well known for its reliable performance and beautiful design. Since its launch, it has carved itself a niche as a 'designer notebook' brand. One of my favorite models is the Sony VAIO VGN-CS215J/R 14.1-Inch laptop. It has a sexy and luscious red casing with a black colored keyboard. Very sexy!

Like many VAIO models, the Sony VAIO VGN-CS215J/R 14.1-Inch laptop has rounded corners. It's casing is mostly red with a tinge of silver colored lining. The outer casing has a glossy red surface with the logo 'VAIO" etched in silver.

On the inside, there is a speaker panel right below the screen display, with a strip of easy-access buttons. They keyboard is black in color, and consist of stand-alone buttons, very much like the keyboard on Apple computers. Below the keyboard is a spacious track pad that is also red in color.

Like all Sony computers, the beautiful exterior hides many powerful features. The Sony VAIO VGN-CS215J/R 14.1-Inch laptop is powered by Intel's 2GHZ T6400 processor with 4GB of RAM. It also comes with a 250GB hard drive and a dual-layer DVD drive. The 14-inch screen displays amazing visuals. It is incorporated with the XBRITE technology from Sony that produces greater contrasts; brighter whites and deeper blacks. The Sony VAIO VGN-CS215J/R 14.1-Inch laptop has also great connectivity with 3 USB ports, a memory stick slot, and express card slot, Bluetooth connectivity and a 802.11a wi-fi network card.

Whenever Sony launches a product, you can almost always expect it to be a super performer with an amazing looking design. Although there were a few times when a Sony product wasn't received very well in the market, you are assured that most of the products they come up with are of the highest quality like the new Sony VAIO VGN-N365E/B with a 15.4" wide LCD screen.

Electronic products like computers are especially designed to cater to the specific needs of various people. The Blackberry, for example is especially designed for super busy people who are always on the move. Its features certainly suit their hectic lifestyle.

But when it comes to laptops, before purchasing one for yourself, it is also wise to check it its features perfectly suits your particular needs. Sony VAIO VGN-N365E/B is worth checking out.

Sony VAIO Notebooks are marketed using the slogan 'Notebooks that get noticed' which is quite true because VAIO notebooks are certainly designed to look really glamorous. It has a sleek and stylish exterior that certainly makes it eye-catching.

Its display screen is really outstanding because it uses WXGA TFT Active Matrix technology. Moreover, its screen has an incredible resolution of 1280x800 measuring 14.5" wide enough so you can watch movies more comfortably.

It has a couple 512MB memory sticks that have been installed already. For Windows Vista fans, you would have to upgrade your memory to 3GB but you still have to carefully store the original memories. You can use again the recovery sticks supplied by Sony but you would have to produce the original memory sticks.

Sony VAIO VGN-N365E/B has an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor that is capable of handling large applications and programs. The speed of the computer will not be affected however. The memory of the hard drive is 120 GB with 5400 RPM which is definitely large.

It is definitely possible to store numerous programs and files with this laptop. It has a touch pad which you can use in scrolling pages. Reading long pages is definitely made easier.

The only minor downside of the laptop is that it only has 2 USB ports and if you use plug a mouse to one of these then only one USB port is available. It doesn't have a built-in webcam too. The cooling system may not be as great too as reported by some users and it gets hot pretty fast.

However, the cost of this laptop is only $467.99 to $774.99 which really makes it affordable and worth spending your money with.

Is the Sony VAIO VGN-CS11Z/R better than the earlier models? Let's see what exciting features are included in this new generation. The VAIO laptop is mainly designed to correct all the drawbacks and add some advanced features compared to earlier models. The same thing was done with Sony's new CR series model. Different styles appear with attractive color variations, such as ruby red.

VAIO Design Features

The new VAIO has a smooth and slightly curved body that is eye pleasing and modern looking. It's great for those searching for a long lasting and eye-catching laptop. VAIOs are supple, sleek, and made from the best lightweight materials available. They're also tough and durable, which is very important for busy people on the go.

This version of the VAIO is also designed with the user in mind. Buttons on the keyboard are placed in useful locations and with the end user's comfort and convenience as priorities. The keys on the keyboard are large, square shaped, and comfortably spaced for maximum typing flow and practicality. The VAIO laptop has a small and user-friendly touch pad, with directional mouse buttons that are not obtrusive.

VAIO Weight And Battery Life

One of the new VAIO laptop's best features is its light weight. Made from modern plastics and metals, Sony managed to keep the weight to a reasonable 2.5 kilograms. The VAIO is designed for both internal and external use and has a four-and-a-half hour battery life, which is a good amount of time for a laptop.

VAIO Screen

The Sony VAIO screen is available in 14.1 viewable inches. One knock against this VAIO is that it has a narrow viewing angle, so you must sit in front of screen for clear visibility. Angled viewing distorts and blanks out the images pretty easily. The laptop's monitor screen also becomes noticeably duller when used in battery mode vs. connected to an electrical source.

VAIO Blue-Ray Drive

The VAIO's Blue-Ray drive is a high-definition viewer which can be installed. It presents a crystal clear viewing experience, with a choice to produce HD content. The VAIO screen resolution is perfect for viewing HD content. Due to the absence of HDMI ports, however, you will not be able to view HD content on any external viewing source.

Special Features of VAIO

The VAIO offer great modern technology, including the NVidia GeForce 9300 GS graphics card (pre-installed). This provides you with excellent graphics capabilities for multimedia and playing modern computer games that require the most current video display technology. Other special features to be impressed by include: three USB ports, an outstanding Wi-Fi switch, Mini-Fire wire Connection, various SD and MS card slots and an Express Card Slot.

VAIO Pros and Cons

To be sure, this new Sony VAIO is not perfect. For example, the aforementioned screen clarity flaw in the case of using battery power rather than electricity. However, the keyboard and other design features, along with the noted technological advances, make the VAIO worthy of your consideration if you're in the market for a new laptop.

At the risk of sounding shallow and superficial, I confess that I'm one of those that may purchase a laptop purely based on its good looks. In the past decade, manufacturers like Apple and Sony have placed great emphasis on producing beautiful laptops. My job requires me to carry my laptop with me wherever I go so I have decided to get my self a mini laptop or netbook. If I am to carry a laptop with me wherever I go, it might as well look good, so I have purchased the super sleek Sony VAIO VGN-P530H/Q Lifestyle PC (black).

The Sony VAIO VGN-P530H/Q Lifestyle PC is thinner than most netbooks in the market. In fact, it is as thin as a mobile phone. One of my favorite features of this model is its sleek design. It is more rectangular than other netbooks in the market, measuring at 9.7 inches long and 4.8 inches wide. It weighs at just 1.4 pounds making it a truly portable mini laptop.

The Sony VAIO GN-P530H/Q Lifestyle PC is not all good looks and no substance. Hidden behind its beautiful design is a feature packed mini laptop. This netbook is also a GPS navigator. You can use this notebook to navigate and find directions even without an internet connection (in the USA and Canada). By using the GPS function you can find directions and navigate to your desired location within the 50 miles radios from where you are.

Instead of your regular LCD display, this model comes with a 1600 x 768 resolution that runs on Xbrite-eco technology with LEC back lights. The keyboard's design is pretty refreshing as it is usually a challenge to do any heavy word processing on a netbook's keyboard. The shift keys are very strategically located and typing on this Sony netbook feels very much like typing on a regular keyboard. It is powered by a 1.3Ghz Intel processor and comes with 2GB of RAM. It also comes with a 60GB ATA hard drive.

The paint surface has magnesium that gives it a slight shift in color when viewed from different angels. Features & Performance: The set of powerful specs on the Sony VAIO VGN-FW465J/B laptop makes it suitable to take on any heavy computing tasks, whether it is for work or entertainment. The hi-def screen was amazing in displaying graphics, movies and videos. The images were bright and very crisp. Laptop Disassembly and Processor replacement steps. All this operation require all your attention and your knowledge If you are a little queasy about tearing apart your laptop and replacing the processor maybe this will help. You have to keep in mind that replacing the processor is a risky thing to do. You need:

  • 1 Small Flat Bladed standard screw driver
  • 1 Very Small Phillips head screw driver
  • Some Thermal compound to put on the new processor.
  • A mobile Duron processor or a mobile Athlon processor of the "25W Balanced" variety. The processor used in this example is a Mobile Athlon 4 1.2Ghz processor. The processor is probably of the 35W variety. However, the 35W processors do not work correctly in all laptops.

Step 1 Backup all your important things.

Step 2 Take out the batteries and unplug the laptop from the AC adapter.

Step 3 Chose a free area like an empty desktop place the laptop on it then open the laptop and tilt the display all the way back. Place a newspaper or something over the top of the display so you don't scratch or scuff it.

Step 4 You have first to remove the panel that has the speakers and power button on it. It is secured by 1 little screw on the left hand side of the panel. Remove the screw and then slide the panel to the right. With the panel slid to the right you can then carefully lay it on the display.

Step 5 Now you need to remove the keyboard. There is 1 little screw securing the keyboard. This screw is located above the F6 key. Remove the screw. Lift the keyboard by the top, where the Function keys are, and slide it out towards the top of the laptop. Lay the keyboard on top of the panel that is all ready on top of the display.

The Heat Sink/Fan combination is now accessible as well as the harddrive and DVD drive.

Step 6 You need to carefully remove some copper ground straps attached to the Heat Sink/Fan combo . These copper straps have adhesive on them and can be carefully peeled back out of the way. There is one copper strap at the top of the assembly, under the display panel support that is very difficult to remove. Left this strap in place until you actually began the removal of the Heat Sink/Fan combo.

Step 7 There is one small bracket on the Heat Sink/Fan combo by the screw on the upper left corner that is secured to the Heat Sink/Fan combo by another little screw. There is an arrow with the number 3 pointing to this bracket. Remove the screw for that bracket and rotate the bracket out of the way.

Step 8 There are 3 screws securing the Heat Sink/Fan combo to the motherboard. 1 screw (Labeled with an arrow and the Number 1) is at the upper right, the second screw (Labeled with an arrow and the Number 2) is at the lower left, and the third screw (Labeled with an arrow and the Number 3) is at the upper left. These screw are identified on the Heat Sink with the arrow and the numbers 1, 2, 3. Unscrew all 3 screws. The screws will not come out of the Heat Sink/Fan combo. Just unscrew them until the heat sink is free of the motherboard.

Step 9 This is not necessary, but you can unplug the fan power leads from the motherboard. The fan power connector unplugs, from the motherboard, by lifting straight up.

Step 10 You are now ready to remove the Heat Sink/Fan Combo. Remember there is still a copper ground strap stuck to it at the top under the display panel brackets. Carefully work the Heat Sink/Fan combo back and forth to unstick it from the processor and to begin unsticking the copper strap. You will be able to slip the Heat Sink/Fan combo toward the bottom of the laptop and rotate it too the left to get the copper strap off of Heat Sink/Fan combo.

With the Heat Sink/Fan combo out of the way you now have access to the processor and the special ZIF socket that the processor is in.

OK take a deep breath now because this is maybe the scariest part.

Step 11 It's time to remove the processor. You need a small flat bladed screw driver for this part.

The processor is going to slide to the right in the ZIF socket. Put the screw driver in the notch on the left side and begin to apply pressure to the right. The processor will slide about 1/8th of an inch to the right.

Step 12 Before removing the old processor note how it is oriented in the slot. The new processor will need to be oriented the same way. Peel off the plastic cover from the old processor and place it on the new processor. Remove the old processor and place the new processor in its place.

Step 13 With the new processor in place you now need to close the ZIF socket. Place the screw driver in the notch on the right and begin to apply pressure to the left. The processor will slide about 1/8th of an inch to the left. Now you just have to put everything back and you are done. Do not forget to put some Thermal Grease on the processor before you put the Heat Sink/Fan combo back on.

Step 14 Carefully position the Heat Sink/Fan combo back over the top of the processor. Tighten the 3 Heat Sink/Fan combo screws.

Step 15 Plug the cooling fan power leads back into the motherboard.

Step 16 Place the little bracket you removed in Step 7 back onto the Heat Sink/Fan combo

Step 17 Place all of the copper ground straps into their correct locations.

Step 18 Carefully check all of the Heat Sink/Fan Screws. Carefully check that you plugged in the cooling fan Power Connectors.

Step 18 Place the keyboard back into place and tighten down its screw.

Step 19 Place the Speaker Panel back into place and tighten down its screw.

Step 20 Start the Laptop and enter the bios setup screen by Pressing F2 as it begins booting you are successful.

Sony is yet to grace the market with a VAIO mini laptop, in fact Sony has been openly reluctant to produce and sell a netbook. Sony executives have said that the cheap notebook concept doesn't align with Sony's "premium" corporate image. That said, I've seen Sony make some pretty rubbish electrics before, my TV for example, so this could be taken two ways: snobbery or a joke.

But in recent years, Sony have come out with some very genuine very up-market products that support this claim. Sony's Bravia TV range is a market leader, they've continued the 'Walkman' legacy against the might of the Apple iPod and iTunes and in gaming, it's extended its PlayStation brand, replacing the best-seller PS2 with the PS3 with a staggering £425 RRP against Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. It's VAIO laptop line is also very good.

But have they left the netbook market altogether? Technically, yes. Try searching "netbook" on Sony's VAIO mini-site - no results. Sony doesn't and isn't going to be associated with the cheep and cheerful image presented by Asus when it brought out the Eee PC. But they do have a VAIO laptop that is small, light and portable: the VAIO TT.

The TT is an impressive product, offering an 11.1 inch screen, up to 9 hours battery life and weighing a petite 1.3kg putting it on par with the 8.9 inch HP 2133 mini-note and lighter versions of the Asus Eee PC 1000. All of the TT models feature a strong carbon fibre chassis in a choice of two colours, 'intense noir' and 'gold fever'. Sony proclaims carbon fibre is "used in racing car or aircraft manufacturing that's 200% stronger and 30% lighter than conventional materials used in computer chassis design."

A bi-product of the larger screen is a larger keyboard which is very nearly (but not quite) comparable to that of a full size notebook. The keys are large and separated slightly, with the centre of each key indented marginally for better accuracy.

With Sony's TV background, the 11.1 screen comes with a lot of expertise. Viewing on its widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio and 1366x768 resolution, is delightful. Also, the ability to read blu-ray discs (or any disc) gives far more flexibility. You don't have to faff around burning DVD's or downloading films online - and the quality is such that the viewing quality isn't compromised either.

The huge battery life - up to 9 hours - lends itself to use whilst away on business, more than enough for a full working day. Sony has incorporated a variety of power-saving and efficiency features, such as the battery care function which prevents wear and tear on the batteries, automatic adjustment of LCD brightness according to the environment you're working in and the use ultra-efficient Intel Centrino 2 technology.

Connectivity is certainly at the heart of the TT, with embedded 3G 'Everywair' on several models with speeds as high as 7.2mbps. A T-Mobile sim card is incorporated on a free trial. Luckily, you can remove it and use your own sim card so you're not bound to a new contract.

Perhaps then, Sony has very definitely entered the mini laptop market, but specifically marketing it as if they haven't. Oh yes, the website bangs on "slim and sophisticated design" and how portable it is, but Sony is very reluctant to use the 'n' word. Perhaps it needs to be said for them, perhaps not.

The difference between the VAIO TT and a typical netbook like the Asus Eee PC or the Acer Aspire One is so profound. Are they in the same league? Price wise, certainly not; the VAIO TT is expected to retail at around £1,200 for entry level models, compared with a more modest £200-300 for your everyday mini laptop. It's certainly just as portable and useable; however, it is clear Sony's taken a different approach to portability.

Asus pioneered the netbook by starting afresh, building a small computer that could handle simple tasks processing, quick internet and making it affordable. Sony's answer was to reduce the size and weight to make it ultraportable whilst maintaining excellent performance. The result is a very high performance laptop, that has the size and weight properties of a netbook - it is, if you like, the sophisticated mini laptop.

The Sony VAIO VGN-FZ15G notebook is the rectangular typical looking notebook which does not attract you with its outer body. But it has some of very good features. Its black color gives it a proper professional look.

College students who need to make a style statement please look somewhere else!

Key Features

Sony VAIO VGN-FZ15G has a very average battery life which lasts up to only 2.5 hours. This means you cannot trust this notebook to give you a lot of support when you are traveling. You need to carry the charger along and you need to keep a tab on the battery consumption. The keys provided with this notebook works very efficiently without making much noise and the hand space provided with the notebook is properly designed.

Design

The Sony VAIO VGN-FZ15G has not been designed for trendy people who want to flaunt their notebook amongst their friends and colleagues. It has the basic rectangular shape with pointed edges. The dimensions of this notebook are 355.8 x 254.4 x 24.9 mm with the weight of 2.7 kg.
It is provided with a 15.4" widescreen display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 dpi. Sony VAIO VGN-FZ15G has a Clear Bright screen type with Dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT Video Display Card. It also has an internal modem whose speed is 56 kbps for internet and fax utilities.

Core Information

The memory of the Sony VAIO VGN-FZ15G is the process Cache Memory which is 2048 KB. This form of memory can be considered as an intermediary between the main physical RAM and the CPU. The cache makes any data regularly used by CPU instantly obtainable. If the required information is not located in the collection, a fetch is made from the main memory.

Cutting Edge Technology

Sony VAIO VGN-FZ15G sports a 0.3 megapixel in-built camera. The camera doesn't perform very well but it comes handy when you want to have video chat with your near and dear ones with a little bit of disturbance. The notebook also comes with in-built speakers as well. These make the gaming experience on this laptop a nice one with the help of its Intel High Definition Audio. Some of you might miss the finger print reader, but otherwise the notebook is worth buying.

Conclusion

Sony VAIO VGN-FZ15G does not belong for the hip-hop youth of today. It suits well for a home setup. It can also be used professionally but you need to check on the battery usage now and then.

If you are a fanatic follower of Sony laptops then this guide is definitely going to be of some help (unless, you are so stuck on Sony that you know everything about their laptops!). Specifically, the purpose of this article is to inform you about the various VAIO models; hopefully, it will also assist you in buying the laptop that best matches your character, your needs and your pocket.

First of all, you need to know a few things about Sony’s involvement in the laptop world. Sony is recognized globally as one of the best electronics manufacturers in the world. Regarding the laptop world, although Sony can be considered as a ‘newcomer’, it is a fact nowadays that they are one of the dominant players in this game. The VAIO laptops series by Sony has seen a great success since the very beginning of its lunch and Sonly quickly won a large piece of the sales pie.
VAIO laptops are divided into special categories; each category features laptops aimed at a specific characteristic. Without loosing any time, let’s have a quick look at categories A and B.
Starting with the VAIO A-series, we will find laptops equipped with Centrino processors and thus, extended wireless capabilities. Those laptops are generally not the ones you would like to move a lot with. They weight a lot and they are pretty large. A - Series laptops are mostly designed towards being a desktop replacement but of course, you can always move them around if you wish to. The processing power of the A series is high enough to substitute this of most desktops and you can always enjoy your multimedia with a 17” screen on them. If you know that you are not going to move a lot with your laptop then this is one of your best choices.

For the VAIO B - Series someone could easily say that the ‘B’ stands for business; that’s probably true. Those small, portable 14” laptops will be your best co-worker while traveling around; they are very portable and they will weight a lot less than the laptops you might have been used to. B series feature a 100+GB HDD and the battery life can last up to 4 hours! Of course, wireless capabilities are a must for any business laptop and this laptop comes equipped with a Centrino processor that will make things even easier for you. If you don’t really mind about large screens and brutal processing power then the B series will be your best choice to get your job done efficiently.

If you are a fan of the Sony Vaio line of computers and have been waiting for the company to roll out a netbook model in this line, wait no longer, because Sony will be unveiling a new netbook, the new W-Series, in August of 2009.

Although the introduction is late to the booming netbook market, Sony has said that it intentionally waited to produce a netbook as part of its product planning strategy.

Netbook to Be First Launched in Japan

The new netbook will be launched in Japan at the beginning of August with the United States and Europe to follow shortly after the launch. Most of the netbooks on the market are offering 1024 x 600. The W-Series also incorporates LED backlighting and the XBRITE-ECO LCD technology.
  • Hardware: The hardware on the W-Series is quite comparable to other netbooks with an Intel 1.66 GHz processor, 1GB of memory, a 160GB hard drive for storage, touchpad, built-in Web cam, microphone, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, and Intel High Definition Audio Sound System.

When a girl, probably a young girl or teenager, is looking for a pink Sony Vaio for sale, there really isn't anything that will be a good replacement. Certainly not the standard gunmetal grey version, for crying out loud. The fire engine red or electric blue Dells would be a poor substitute. No. When you want pink, you need pink.

But, while Sony Vaios are some of the most high end and stable laptops on the market today, with the widest range of features and certainly some of the highest "cool factor," there is a price to be paid. That's not metaphorical, either, the price tag on Sony Vaios is literally one of the highest in the laptop market. Basically, they're worth it, but it's gonna cost you.

The natural next step is to look for a used pink Sony vaio for sale. Well, that's easier said than done. The specificity of color, particularly an unusual color such as pink, makes the item quite a bit more rare, which in turn makes the search quite a bit more difficult than it would be otherwise.

There are a few places that would be good to look, though. The thing that makes the internet so great is that it can bring people with very specific interests together, though they would probably not have organically come in contact otherwise.

You can look on online auction sites and online classified sites, to begin with. Online auctions are great because you can see photos of the item in question, and, more importantly, view the feedback that other buyers have left for the seller to determine if the buyer is reputable or not. Online classifieds, on the other hand, are useful because they focus on a local area as opposed to worldwide distribution. Therefore, you often have the opportunity to meet the seller face to face and view the item before making a purchasing decision.

Trust us. We know girls, and we know gadgets. So we know the gadgets girls like.

Specifications: The Sony VAIO VPC-W111XX/T netbook comes with a Intel N280 processor (1.66GHZ), 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard disk. It has a 10.1-inch LED backlit LCD display and is powered by a 3-cell battery. In terms of connectivity, this model has 2 USB ports, an Ethernet (10/100) port, a VGA output, a SD card slot, Memory Stick Duo card slot, headphone jack, microphone jack, wi-fi (802.11b/g/n) and Bluetooth connectivity (2.1).

Design: The Sony VAIO VPC-W111XX/T netbook comes in brown, pink and white (yes, no black). It measures at 10.5 x 7.1 x 1.3 inches and weighs in at 2.6 pounds. The external casing has a stylish matte surface. All they keys on its keyboard is isolated (like those on Apple computers) and it feels pretty good to type on despite its size. The memory card slots are located on the front, while the other ports and jacks are located on the side.

Features & Performance: The Sony VAIO VPC-W111XX/T netbook works just like any netbooks in the market. It runs on Windows XP and can handle most simple computing tasks pretty well. A feature that makes this model stand out from the rest it's the VAIO Multimedia Streaming software that enables data stream between DLNA-enabled appliances (like your PC or PS 3). Besides that, there is nothing much that differentiates this model from the rest. Its battery lifespan hovers around just 2.5 hours, which is not much compared to many other competing models (such as the Asus 1005HA and the Toshiba Mini)

Overall: One of the major characteristics of the Sony VAIO VPC-W111XX/T netbook is its price. It currently costs around $499 a piece, which is more that $100 more that other popular netbook models. As much as I would like to justify the price (being a Sony fan), there really isn't much good reason for a consumer to fork out the extra dough on this model. Maybe the premium is paid for the 'glitz and glamour' that comes with the brand name. The Sony VAIO VPC-W111XX/T netbook is best left for Sony fans and those who just can't get over its gorgeous design.

History

Although Sony made computers in the 1980s for the Japanese market only, Sony withdrew from the computer business around 1990. Later, Sony re-entered the market, this time globally, under the new VAIO brand, started in 1996 with the PCV series of desktops.

VAIO Brand

The VAIO is a sub-brand for many of Sony's computer products. The branding was created to distinguish items that used consumer audio and video, as well as being conventional computing products.

One example of this was the Sony VAIO W Series personal computer, which was a regular PC and a miniature entertainment center.

Sony is expanding the use of the VAIO label. It can now be found on notebooks, subnotebooks, desktop, and a hard-disk-based audio player that comes in both 20GB and 40GB variations (called VAIO POCKET player).

VAIO Features

High-end VAIO laptops are usually shipped with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium or Business, while low end laptops such as N series come with Microsoft Vista Home Basic.

As of October 2005, VAIO laptops are available upon request without pre-installed software at a slightly lower price. Most recently, some models no longer ship with a Recovery CD, but a special partition on the hard drive is used for the recovery information, including operating system and all bundled software. VAIO users are prompted to create a set of recovery CDs or DVDs immediately after purchase.

VAIO computers use Intel processors, Seagate Technology or Fujitsu hard drives, Infineon RAM, Sony (usually made by Hitachi) or Matsushita optical drives, Intel or NVIDIA graphics processors and Sony speakers.

Current VAIO Models
  • AR - Flagship 17" High-end multimedia machine
  • FZ - The first 15" notebook with BluRay burner
  • CR - New 14" derivatives of the FJ and C Series.
  • BX - Professional 4:3 notebook
  • G - Entry level Vista Laptop for professionals
  • N - Entry level Vista laptop for home users
  • TZ- 11.1" professional notebook, perfect for long business trips with 7hour battery life
  • SZ- 13.3" professional notebook

Bundled software

VAIO computers feature a wide array of specially designed or bundled software that help you to use the laptop for multimedia purposes. Many of these applications inspired similar software or integration into the Windows OS, e.g. Movie Shaker preceded Windows XP's Movie Maker.

Additional software products in the bundle can include:

  • Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements. These products are bundled as part of the video and audio integration that Sony prides its VAIO series on.
  • SonicStage, a digital music manager. Integrated with Sony's Connect downloadable music service, it allows users to transfer music to Sony standalone music players, PDAs, or PSPs.
  • PictureGear, an image management software that predated popular programs like Picasa.
  • VAIO Zone, used for music listening, viewing photo slide shows, and watching TV (when a tuner card is present) and DVDs. VAIO Zone is an equivalent to Apple Front Row and Windows XP Media Center Edition.

VAIO Trivia

Sony named its VAIO line using an acronym for "Video Audio Integrated Operation." The VAIO logo represents a combination of analog and digital signal technology. The 'VA' represents an analog wave and the 'IO' represents digital binary code.

As years pass, technology progresses. As technology progresses, new data storing methods are invented every day. Compact discs where a great achievement, but nobody seems to care about that nowadays; With DVD’s we can achieve storing a lot more than 10 times the data of a compact disc in exactly the same physical dimensions. Well, what am I telling you? Again, that’s really old news. Nowadays, with Blu-ray technology you can store up to 50 GB of data in the same physical dimensions as a CD or a DVD! Yes, it’s true. Blu-ray technology is definitely the future and if you want to be on the cutting-edge of the technology you will certainly need to be equipped with a laptop that takes advantage of it. Well, Sony has something very interesting to propose, the Sony VAIO AR190G.

The brand new AR190G is equipped with a Blu-ray drive witch will not only operate with Blu-ray but it will also serve as a CD/DVD recorder! With the vast amount of data that a Blu-ray disc can store you can watch some of the most hi-res videos you have ever seen in your life. A limited number of Hollywood movies is already available on the market in Blu-ray format and if you want to live the maximum viewing experience then you can link your laptop to your high definition home cinema TV!

Another candy that the AR190G features is the extremely powerful Nvidia GeForece Go 7600 GT graphics card with 256MB of ram! This brutal little chip, along with a 17” widescreen (1290x1200, XBrite + HiColor technology) will definitely give you a shocking experience while watching multimedia on your laptop.

The heart of the AR190G is the 2 GHz Intel Duo Core T2500 processor backed up with 1GB of DDR2 RAM. Additionally, if Blu-ray discs are not enough for you, you can always use the 100GB hard disk drive of your laptop.

Finally, the AR190G comes with a built-in camera, 2 speakers (integrated) a microphone and a remote controller. Regarding connectivity, the AR90G is equipped with FireWire and S-Video ports as well as Memory card slots and a coaxial cable. With all that said, I believe that the only thing that is left to discuss about is the price; well, the AR190G is not the type of laptop you will see everyday. I wouldn’t consider it overpriced but it certainly can’t be afforded by everybody.

Sony has always been brilliant at electronics and hi-tech products, could laptops be the exception to this rule? Of course not! The people at Sony are doing a great job with their VAIO series and the truth is that every moment that passes they are only making them even better! Before we spend any more time talking about things you will find out for yourself, let’s just start talking about the wonderful FS and K laptop series.
Starting off with the FS series, there are generally 2 things that you will notice about those laptops. Those things also happen to be the good news and the bad news. What do you want to hear first, the good ones or the bad ones? Well, whatever you might have chosen I’ll start with the good news. The very first thing that you will notice about those laptops is that they have a really, really chic design! Yes, those are possibly some of the most elegant and attractive laptops out there. Great! You really like the looks of this laptop and you get informed that it’s equipped with a Centrino processor, a DVD recorder, a 15” beautiful screen and many other candy features. What’s left to do before you buy it? The price of course… Whoops! Here we stumble on the bad news; there’s a saying that says “you will only get what you pay for”; that’s definitely the case with the FS laptops. Although those laptops can really be considered a piece of art unfortunately you will not have the chance to own one of them unless you put your hand deep in your pocket!
Next on the list are the Sony VAIO – K Series laptops. K Series share a common characteristic, they all have a brutal processing power. That is, if you are an addicted gamer or a heavy application user then you should definitely make sure you have a look at the K Series. Those little beasts feature a P4 3.2 GHz processor, 1+ GB of ram and more than 100GB of hard disk space! Of course, all this power comes at the cost of lower battery life as well as decreased mobility. To put things together, if battery life and mobility is not a very significant issue for you then this is one of the best laptop Series to choose your new toy from; Sony is good at doing it’s magic and you will not be disappointed by this hi-tech, brutal laptop.

With this months release of the new Sony VAIO mini laptop - the P series (P for Portable) "lifestyle PC" - a stunning 8 inch masterpiece weighing 638g and sporting Windows Vista, 3G Mobile Broadband, inbuilt GPS and features from Sony's other ranges, it raises the question - what is the best Sony VAIO mini laptop?

Essentially there are 3 main contenders:

-Sony VAIO P Series - New "Lifestyle PC"
-Sony VAIO TT Series - The smallest blu-ray notebook
-Sony VAIO SR Series - Award winning laptop computer

Straight away each of them has problems. The P series whilst incredibly small and light, lacks an optical disc drive (that is you CD/DVD-ROM), fast dual-core processor and the screen, whilst good in its class is still limiting. The SR series is a fully fledged 13.3" notebook computer and lacks the portability of the other two models - weighing 3 times as much as the VAIO P series!

The TT itself lacking size could also be a negative for some. The keyboard, whilst a far cry from that of a 7 inch netbook, lacks the size and spacing of a larger notebook or desktop computer. Sony however make an effort spacing out the keys.

The SR series, whilst good in its own field as a notebook simply cannot compete with the portable mini laptops like the VAIO TT and P series. There are also better computers in its size and price category which are handier like the MacBook Air.

So between the former two models, which is best?

The VAIO TT Series is the more complete model. It is a notebook that has been shrunk down to almost netbook sized proportions with an 11.1" screen and weighing only 1.19kg - very similar to 10 inch netbooks. Inside it has a dual core processor, which is more capable than the Intel Atom and although it is less efficient, the VAIO TT's massive battery more than compensates giving out up to 9 hours of battery life - enough for a full days work. Unlike the P series, it has an optical disc drive - which Sony boasts, makes it the worlds "smallest blu-ray notebook."

The VAIO P series' strength lies in its name - P for Portable mini laptop. Sony says it is about the size of a large office envelope, allowing it to neatly fit in a jacket pocket or briefcase. It nearly weighs half the weight of the VAIO TT (as we've already noted, is pretty trim for it's class), yet it can still fit in an 8" screen with 1600x768 resolution (compared to 1024x600 for your everyday netbook), up to 128GB of Solid State Storage and inbuilt GPS.

The two models do have similarities; they both run on Windows Vista, share trademark Sony features like Motion Eye webcam and graphics engine used on the Sony Bravia HD-ready television range.

Ultimately however it depends on personal preference - which is why we want YOUR opinion.
